How to be a Model Competitor

There is more to being a competitor than the quest for victory. Whether you realize it or not, there are also responsibilities that you take on as a member of this sport. Let’s take a look at how you can become a model competitor.

At the Ready
Be prompt and on time for your events. Know when you are competing and be prepared for it. The faster the show moves, the better. Save the social hour for after the show if you aren’t capable of keeping track of your events.

Sportsmanship
Try not to be a poor sport. Almost everyone is guilty of this from time to time. Things tends to happen in the heat of the moment. Be aware of it and try not to let it happen too often. It leaves a bad impression on the crowd, the sport, and your fellow competitors.

Showtime
You’re not just an athlete, like it or not, you’re an entertainer too. Don’t be afraid to have a little fun with the crowd. If appropriate, take the time to sign some autographs and interact with the spectators. Without them, we have no reason to perform.

Chip In
Lend a helping hand. Often times during shows, wood needs to be changed, stands moved, etc. Be willing to help out. Almost all of these shows are run by volunteers, do your best to volunteer as well. Many hands make light work.

Thank You
Competing at a show is a privilege, not a right. It’s easy to forget this, especially at the end of a long season when you’ve traveled hours to get to a contest. Take the time to thank the people that put on the show. They volunteer many hours of their time to make it happen. A little encouragement and appreciation really goes a long way.

Negative Nancy
Don’t be a complainer. Nothing in the world is more contagious than negativity(hepatitis is a close second). If you don’t like something about a contest, don’t complain about it. Ask yourself, how can I help them improve? Then approach the show organizer with your idea and explain how you can help.

This sport will only exist as long as spectators are willing to watch it. Every action that you take to help out the show organizers is a step in the right direction. Do your part now and this sport will still be around for future generations to enjoy.
